If you’ve ever looked for a discount code online, you know just how annoying it is to weed through the fake coupons to finally find the real deal. Whether you use Google or look for deals on Reddit, you can waste tons of time on deals that are expired or straight-up fake.

Many of the discounts you see—particularly for VPNs— are outrageous. You often see deals like “NordVPN, 90% off!!!”

And like most things, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Why all the fake deals?

There’s actually a reason you see all these crazy deals.

Most websites (including ours) that offer a NordVPN discount have an affiliate deal with them. That means they get a commission whenever someone clicks on that website’s link to Nord and purchases their service.

There’s nothing wrong with this practice when it’s done honestly. You get the deal you’re looking for, NordVPN gets more business, we get to keep writing articles like this one that you can read for free.

It’s a win-win-win.

The fake discounts come from dishonest advertising practices on many other sites. Some affiliates bait people by advertising inflated discount rates on Google and Reddit to draw them in, only to reveal the true, lower rate once people enter their site.

Take these search results, for instance. In our Google search, the 4th and 5th results are for 80% off, which we know is fake.

As you can plainly see, the actual discounts are not what was advertised. Even worse, a lot of the codes you see in Google results are fake or out-of-date, which is a giant waste of time.

Why don’t I see any coupon codes?

Sometimes legitimate affiliate sites won’t have the actual discount or coupon code because the discount itself doesn’t require one.

For example, for NordVPN, some discounts need codes, while others just require you to use a specific URL that has the discount built into it.

Sometimes though, you don’t see a discount code because some of the dishonest sites just want you to go to NordVPN’s site via their link so they’ll get the commission. They don’t care if you get a discount or not — as long as some users sign up for Nord through their link, they can keep their commission.
